Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a naturalist and artist. She belonged to the younger Frankfurt branch of the Basel-based Merian family, grew up in Frankfurt am Main, and died in Amsterdam.

The beginnings of flower and still life painting lie in the late Renaissance; this art form was cultivated particularly in the Netherlands from the beginning of the 17th century and reached its highest peak as an independent art form during the Baroque period.
