Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was born in Rottluff, now a district of Chemnitz, and was known as Karl Schmidt until 1906. He began studying architecture in Dresden but gave it up after a year when he became one of the founders of the group "Die Brücke" (The Bridge), together with his fellow architect Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Art movement: Impressionism.
