The Russian painter and graphic artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was one of the great masters of modern art and the preeminent representative of pure abstract painting, which dominated the first half of the 20th century. Why did Kandinsky draw squares with concentric circles? To this question, he replied: "I applied stripes and splashes of color to the canvas with a palette knife and let them sing with all intensity... Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another to evoke vibrations in the soul."
